IGNOU Madurai Regional Centre: This is the 2nd RC of the IGNOU university in Tamil Nadu. It was instituted on January 18, 2008 to broaden its services and to work harmoniously with the learner support centres located in 19 districts of the state such as Virudhunagar, Tuticorin, Tiruchirapalli (Trichy), Tiruvarur, Tirupur, Tirunelveli, Theni, Thanjavur, Tenkasi, Sivagangai, Ramanathapuram (Ramnad), Pudukkottai, Nilgiris, Madurai, Karur, Erode, Dindigul, Coimbatore, and Ariyalur.
Dr M Shanmugam is the current senior regional director at IGNOU’s regional department. Madurai is an ancient and cultural city located on the Vaigai River banks in Tamil Nadu state in southern India. The official language of the citizens is Tamil, and the third is Tamil Sangam. The city is well-known for the world-famous Meenakshi Amman Temple situated in the middle of the city drawing the attention of tourists from all over the world.
The regional centre in Madurai is located closer to the city centre and has jurisdiction over 16 districts in the state of Tamil Nadu. The study centre operates from a permanent building which is equipped with various student support services.

IGNOU Madurai Regional Centre Admission Updates 2025
IGNOU will commence the admission for all offered courses into the July 2025 academic session at the Madurai Regional Centre on 12 May 2025*. Students who want to enroll in online, regular or distance programs, can do so until by the last date of 30 June 2025*. Online application is ongoing at ignouadmission.samarth.edu.in. Students can also apply at the regional office of Madurai.
IGNOU Madurai Regional Centre Admission Process 2025
- On the official website of the regional centre rcmadurai.ignou.ac.in you can find the link to access the authorized admission portal, click on “Fresh admission & Re-registration for July 2025 Cycle” under the “About Us” section and get redirected to the authorized admission portal ignouadmission.samarth.edu.in.
- Click on the “Click here for new registration” from the left side of the page to get prompted to the next page.
- Enter the username, and password, add the name of the candidate, email address, mobile number, etc. and complete the registration.
- Once you have registered as a student, log in using the initials like the username and password.
- Continue with the form fill-up process, choose an IGNOU program, and upload the documents like the educational qualifications proof, scanned photograph and signature of the applicant, category proof if from SC/ST/OBC, and work experience document.
- Choose from net banking or credit or debit cards, and pay the Rs. 300 registration fee to complete the application.

The IGNOU Madurai Regional Centre is currently functioning under Dr M Shanmugam, the senior regional director. The support centre is equipped with various facilities like a library filled with project reports, and reference books, warehouses for study materials, a conference hall, spacious classrooms, computer Labs, a Gyan Vani FM Radio Station, a reception desk with two telephones to help students with queries, one AC seminar hall for conducting workshops, meeting, etc. Furthermore, Swayam Prabha Studio broadcasts a live educational channel in Tamil language.
