IGNOU Port Blair Regional Centre: IGNOU established the Port Blair regional centre as the post-tsunami development activity. The departments started operating on March 27, 2006, at JNRM Campus. Dr. R. V. R. Murthy is currently appointed as the senior regional director. Initially, the RC started monitoring 33 academic programs and around 1341 admissions, and only one study centre.
Over the 13 years, the regional office expanded to faraway islands and other remote places, like Mayabunder (at the North end) and Campbell Bay (at the South end). Students who complete the UG programs in JNRM/ANCOL/MGGC/DBRAIT can apply for postgraduate courses or PG Diplomas within the island.

Dr. R. V. R. Murthy administers the regional centre as the senior regional director. Under the jurisdiction of the RC, there’s a jail study centre that offers free higher education to 42 jail inmates. To address the issue of limited academic resources in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, IGNOU started Saturday Video-Class using 204 CDs from 2017, 11 November. Other than this, there is Gyandarshan, a 24×7 educational TV channel.
Students are equipped with better communication systems, like emails, bulk SMS, and efficient support services. The RC also offers mass awareness through print media, TV and radio. Doordarshan Kendra-Port Blair broadcasts educational programs to provide better knowledge to individuals.
The Port Blair Centre is self-sufficient, as it offers affordable to free programs. Additionally, employment opportunities are offered to more than 150 teachers and 30 members. Although the exam centres are limited in numbers, they are well maintained at Mayabunder, Hut Bay, Car Nicobar, Nancowrie, and Campbell Bay to serve more students.
